Letter from the Director

Photograph of Student Housing Director Emily GalindoDear Student,

Congratulations on your decision to attend the University of California, Davis and to live in Student Housing!

Living on campus in the residence halls is an experience that will greatly enhance your academic success and provide you with the resources that will ensure a smooth transition to your college experience. One of our goals is to provide a positive and supportive community environment where students can live, study and thrive. This is accomplished by providing both student and professional staff that work and provide interactive opportunities in the residence halls where you will be living. These staff members maintain direct working relationships with each Dean’s office and key academic support staff on campus. There are simply too many opportunities to list but be assured that you will have a positive experience and academic success if you take advantage of all we have to offer.

One of the biggest transitions you face may be moving away from home for the first time. You may find that you will be living with someone you have just met and who may come from a different background. This can be rewarding, and at times, possibly challenging. To establish good communication between roommates, all students are expected to participate in a Roommate Workshop during the first week of classes. These sessions typically result in the establishment of guidelines that facilitate a process for addressing any roommate disagreements or conflicts. Although our Student Housing staff are trained and prepared to mediate any issues that may arise, it also requires a commitment from everyone involved to work together to achieve positive outcomes.

During the year, if you have any questions or concerns regarding any Student Housing information, please do not hesitate to contact our office at studenthousing@ucdavis.edu or 530-752-2033. Please visit our website, housing.ucdavis.edu, and click on the various links to learn more about our services, staff, policies, and other important information.

Again, congratulations on your achievement and your decision to come to Davis. I look forward to welcoming you in September.

About The Housing Contract Offer and The Housing Application

Housing contracts will be offered to all incoming freshmen and first-year transfer students as soon as they submit their SIR. The contract is for room and board for the entire year. Students under 18 years of age must have their parent or guardian accept the contract online as a guarantor.

The Housing Application walks the student through the application process and includes the information necessary to complete the application, including deadlines, terms and conditions, reservation fees, and policies. It also includes links to information about the residence halls to help students decide what their residence hall preferences are. Lastly, the application includes access to a tool to help students who wish to find and select their own rommates.

The Housing Application provides status updates throughout the summer, and it includes a correspondence tool, so return to it regularly. Students are encouraged to check their UC Davis email account daily for important information from the university.

In late August, room assignments will be completed and announced through the student’s UCD email account.
