Building Namesake

Mountain mahogany

Mahogany

Cercocarpus betuloides, mountain mahogany

In the tropics, the mahogany is a large tree known for its beauty, durability and color. In California this beautiful medium-sized evergreen shrub lives primarily in California's coastal foothills. It's loved by native bees while flowering, birds while seeding, and humans year-round. The curly tails of the seeds make it look as though it's clouded in smoke. Beautiful and tough, mahogany leaves provide a nice shelter to many members of the animal kingdom. The UC Davis Arboretum uses mahoganies throughout its landscape; they thrive in tough soils and use very little water. For more information visit the UC Davis Arboretum gardens webpage.
