California scrub oak

Scrub Oak

Quercus spp, California scrub oak

The tree that looks like a shrub! California scrub oaks are native of California and able to thrive in harsh conditions. Known for their low-water needs, ability to resprout after fires, and grow in rocky hills, scrub oaks hybridize freely and populate large areas of California. Their presence provides the foundation necessary for sustainable oak ecosystems. Their acorns are eaten by many types of birds and insects while their tough, dense form provides the perfect shelter for a variety of California fauna. Scrub oaks can be found in the UC Davis Arboretum near the Gazebo in the Arboretum's west end and in the Arboretum's California Foothills Collection.
