Annual Recruitments
Student Housing and Dining Services hires hundreds of student employees each year, many of which are recruited for on an annual basis. In order to help students who are looking for campus employment to plan ahead, these positions are listed below.
Students may apply for a position during its recruitment period. During a position's recruitment period, the position will be listed as an "Open Position" on the Student Employment Opportunities webpage. The scheduled recruitment period for each position is included below.
In addition to annual recruitment opportunties, other student positions become available on an as-needed basis each year. Positions are often in functional areas such as residential services/customer service, dining services, accounting, IT, facilities maintenance and custodial, and marketing. Students who are interested in employment with Student Housing and Dining Services should check the Student Employment Opportunities webpage regularly.
Community Advisors
- Recruitment Period: Fall Quarter
- Position Description:
The responsibilities of a Community Advisor (CA) are centered around a student community in which the staff member focuses on the growth and development of the residents. Under the supervision of the Resident Director (RD), the CA serves as a live-in resource person to residents so as to meet the goals of the Residential Education Program. CAs participate in housing training, community event planning, programming, safety and citizenship within each community and meeting commitments approximately 19.5 hours per week.
Note: CAs live in both the residence halls and The Green at West Village and are provided room and board.
After Hours Assistants
- Recruitment Period: End of Fall Quarter
- Position Description:
After Hours Assistant (AHA) are live-in staff members who respond to immediate facilities concerns (i.e., lockouts, clogged sink, etc.) for our residents after normal business hours. AHAs participate in extensive training, safety and citizenship within each community and are shifted approximately 19.5 hours per week. This is a year-round position with room and board being provided in our residence halls spaces.
Note: AHAs live in the residence halls and are provided room and board.
Academic Peer Mentors
- Recruitment Period: November–February
- Position Description:
Academic Peer Mentors are student leaders who support students' academic transitions to UC Davis through one on one mentoring, staffing the check in desk at the Residential Academic Centers in the residence halls and facilitating academic programming through Housing.
Note: Academic Peer Mentors typically do not live in the residence halls, are not provided room and board. They receive an hourly pay and work primarily in the residence halls.
Living-Learning Community Peer Mentors
- Recruitment Period: November–February
- Position Description:
Living-Learning Community Peer Mentors are student leaders who support first year students in a specific community with academic transitions to UC Davis through one on one mentoring, and facilitating academic programming in their Living-Learning Community. Positions are available to work with the following communities: African Diaspora, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, Middle East/North African/South Asian.
Note: Living-Learning Community Peer Mentors typically do not live in the residence halls, are not provided room and board. They receive an hourly pay rate and work primarily in the residence halls.
Area Service Desk and Mail Clerks
- Recruitment Period: January–February
- Position Description:
Working at the Area Service Desks (ASDs) in our residence halls is both fun and fast-paced! These positions play a large role in our annual Moove-In and Moove-Out process, as well as provide a variety of services to our residents throughout the academic year. We work around your class schedule and approved internships and Work-study is accepted. Experience in a customer service or office position is desired, but not required. Applicants must be available to start MANDATORY training prior to the start of fall quarter classes.
Desk Clerks: A "front of the house" customer-service-based position. Provide assistance and general information to students, staff, and vendors. Issue lockout cards and packages to first-year students living in the residence halls. Equipment check-out: cookware for community kitchens, sports equipment, and board games.
Mail Clerks: Primarily a "back of the house" independent work position. Accept deliveries from various package carriers (i.e. USPS, FedEx, etc.), sort packages by building, process packages, 'slot' letter mail in residents' mailboxes, provide backup to Desk Clerks, when needed, and assist residents with package concerns and opening their mailboxes.
Sustainability Interns
- Recruitment Period: Quarterly; October–April
- Position Description:
The Sustainability Intern part-time volunteer position (4-10 hours a week) who supports sustainability initiatives to increase awareness with on campus residents and patrons of campus dining facilities. Interns support sustainability programs, initiatives, communications, and waste audits.

Sustainability Peer Educator
- Recruitment Period: February–April
- Position Description:
The Sustainability Peer Educator (SPE) position is a part-time student staff member (up to 12 hours a week) who serves as a resource to residents, staff and patrons of the dining facilities in order to increase awareness in the areas of sustainability. SPEs are responsible for facilitating sustainability education programs and initiatives by developing and facilitating workshops, tabling events, and communication materials.

Zero Waste Coordinator
- Recruitment Period: February–April
- Position Description:
The Zero Waste Coordinator position is a part-time student staff member (up to 10 hours a week) who serves as a resource to residents, staff and patrons of the dining facilities in order to increase awareness of the University of California zero waste by 2020 goal and move towards zero-landfill waste by 2020. The Zero Waste Coordinator supports zero-waste events, organizes waste audits and engages the campus community about waste reduction, recycling and composting.

Resident Garden Coordinator
- Recruitment Period: February–April
- Position Description:
The Resident Garden (RG) Coordinator is a part-time student staff member (up to 12 hours a week) who is responsible for overseeing the Resident Garden @ Segundo, including maintenance, hosting open volunteer hours, and facilitating garden-centered educational programs. The RG Coordinator is employed year-round.

Sustainability Student Assistant
- Recruitment Period: February–April
- Position Description:
The Sustainability Student Assistant supports professional staff with sustainability initiatives and programs, such as waste generation, energy usage, and water usage tracking; developing sustainability marketing materials; and supporting engagement programs. Up to 12 hours a week during the academic year, and up to 20 hours a week during the summer.

Orientation Leaders
- Recruitment Period: December–April
- Position Description:
Orientation Leaders (OLs) are student staff members who work during Aggie Orientation to provide transitional support services for all incoming students at UC Davis. Orientation Leaders serve as a resource to incoming students and family members as well as campus personnel to meet the goals of the UC Davis Orientation program. OLs participate in mandatory trainings in spring quarter, a virtual meeting with their supervisor over the summer, and an intensive 4 day training in September before the Aggie Orientation program.
Orientation Team Leads
- Recruitment Period: December–April
- Position Description:
Orientation Team Leads (OTLs) are a mid-level leadership position. Team Leads are 50 student staff members who receive leadership training, as well as train and supervise a group of 20-25 Orientation Leaders. Team Leads act as a liaison between the Orientation Leaders and Orientation Student Managers. In addition, Team Leads serve behind the scenes with event management to ensure a positive orientation experience for new students. Team Leads serve as a resource to professional and student staff, incoming students and family members and campus personnel to meet the goals and learning outcomes of the Aggie Orientation Program.
Orientation Program Assistants
- Recruitment Period: March–April
- Position Description:
Orientation Program Assistants are student staff members who work during spring quarter, summer and September to provide administrative, customer service and event management support for the Orientation Office. Orientation Program Assistants receive training in the areas of customer service, administrative duties, professionalism, and Orientation program policies. The responsibilities of the Orientation Program Assistants include providing customer service to all participants as well as providing administrative support to the program. The Program Assistant serves as a resource person to incoming students and family members so as to meet the goals of the Orientation program.
Guest Service Assistant
- Recruitment Period: February–April
- Position Description:
The responsibilities of a Guest Service Assistant (GSA) are centered around supporting the customer service and clerical duties for the Summer Conference Program. Guest Services Assistants receive training on a variety of topics, including customer service, online systems, and teamwork. Serve as a campus representative for individuals staying on campus. They staff and operate conference desks; use conferencing software to perform guest check in and check out; cash collections, control, and deposit; key control; mail distribution; guest information services and perform a variety of other guest services.
Facilities Maintenance and Custodial
- Recruitment Period: April–June
- Position Description:
Students who work in Facilities Maintenance work full-time throughout the summer. Work performed can vary by day. Please check back for a more complete description; coming soon.
