Application Process: Residence Halls

The application process for the residence halls varies based on if the applicant is a freshman, a transfer student, or a returning or continuing student, and whether the application is for fall quarter, for winter or spring quarter, or for summer session. Refer to the appropriate section below for specific application information.

Read the Cancellation Process to learn how to cancel a residence hall application.

Freshmen Students

"Freshmen Students" is defined as students who are entering UC Davis for the first time, and who attended high school in their previous year.

Entering in Fall Quarter

Incoming freshmen who are admitted for fall quarter will receive a housing contract offer after submitting their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). The housing contract offer will be sent within 24 hours of submitting the SIR. Once received, students may begin the online housing application process. An email invitation will also be sent to students following their SIR.

Application instructions are summarized below. The deadline to complete the housing contract is included within the application and the email invitation, and is usually within 1-2 days of the SIR deadline. The freshmen application process typically is open from mid-March through April.

Fall Quarter Application Instructions

  • After submitting the SIR, log into the MyHousing Portal and select “Housing Application” from the menu to begin the Housing Application; it may take up to 24 hours after submitting the SIR before the Housing Application is available
  • Read the Terms of Use in the MyAdmissions application
  • Pay the reservation fee to begin the online housing application
  • Complete the application; review and accept the Residence Hall Contract and Conditions of Contract; electronically sign the contract; applicants under the age of 18 must have their parents and/or guardians electronically sign the contract
  • Complete the application by the application deadline (the deadline is listed within the application); refer to the Student Housing Calendar for additional important housing dates and deadlines

Application Help

Reservation Fee

  • Submit the reservation fee to begin the online housing application; it may take up to 24 hours for payments to post to the account
  • Payments may be made by e-check using your bank account information, by credit card or checks can be mailed using the payment coupon on the application; please note that mailing checks will take longer to post to student's accounts/application
  • Important: submission of the reservation fee is considered part of the application completion process; the reservation fee is part of the first quarter housing fees and will be deducted from the total amount due

Guaranteed Housing Requirements

  • Be sure to complete the application by the deadline in order to qualify for guaranteed housing
  • Applicants who file their SIR after the campus deadline or submit their housing application after the application deadline will be offered housing based upon available space; contact Student Housing to be placed on a waiting list

Room Assignment Information

  • Incoming residents will be advised that their room information is available in late August via their UC Davis email account
  • Assignment information includes: housing location including building name and room number, roommates’ and suitemates’ (if applicable) names, email addresses and phone numbers
  • To retrieve assignment information, log back into MyAdmissions and return to the “Housing Application Request” page
  • Important: future residents should continue to monitor their Housing Application page for new notices and updates

Entering in Winter or Spring Quarter

Incoming freshmen who are admitted for winter or spring quarter are eligible to live in the residence halls, but because residence hall contracts extend the entire academic year (and subsequently the vacancy rate is low), applicants will be offered housing only as space becomes available.

Applicants should contact Student Housing and request to be placed on a waiting list. Additional instructions will be included if a contract is offered.

Transfer Students

"Transfer Students" is defined as students who are entering UC Davis for the first time, and are transferring from a community college.

Entering in Fall Quarter

Transfer students admitted for fall quarter should refer to the Application Process for Transfer Apartments.

Entering in Winter or Spring Quarter

Transfer students may contact Student Housing to request to be placed on the transfer application waitlist. Transfer students are offered contracts based upon available space according to a first-come, first-served basis, until all spaces are filled. Transfer students will be notified if they are offered a housing contract; additional information will be included in the contract offer, including the application deadline and how to apply online. Applications should be submitted online through the MyHousing tile on MyUCDavis. The reservation fee is due by the application deadline. Applicants should read the Contract Information document for additional application information. Incoming residents will be advised of their room information by email.

Students who miss their deadlines will forfeit their spot on the list and will need to contact Student Housing to be added back to the transfer application list. All contact forms need to be submitted along with the reservation fee by the deadline in order to receive a space in the residence halls. Transfer students over the age of 24 will be referred to campus apartments, including The Colleges at LaRue.

Returning Students

"Returning Students" refers to all current UC Davis students who, as first-year freshmen, LIVED in the residence halls in the year preceding the year for which they would like to live with Student Housing for a second year, OR, as a first-year transfer student, LIVED in The Green in the year preceding the year for which they would like to live with Student Housing for a second year.

Returning residents from the 2023-24 academic year may be offered an opportunity to live in Student Housing for their second year depending on availability of space. Students will receive information about second year housing in fall quarter of their freshman year through their UC Davis email account. If offered, there will be a limited amount of time to apply for second year housing and a reservation fee payment will be required.

For more information about second year housing, please contact Student Housing at 530-752-2033 or email studenthousing@ucdavis.edu.

Continuing Students

"Continuing Students" refers to all current UC Davis students who DID NOT LIVE in the residence halls or The Green in the year preceding the year for which they would like to live in the residence halls or The Green.

Fall, Winter and Spring Quarter

Typically, due to limited space, students who did not live in the residence halls in their previous year aren't eligible to live in the residence halls. However, continuing students may contact Student Housing to inquire about the possibility of space availability: though unlikely, availability can vary from year to year. When space becomes available, Student Housing keeps a waitlist.

Summer Session Students

All Students attending Summer Session

The residence halls are managed during the summer by Conference Housing. Students who wish to apply for residence hall housing for either summer session should visit Conference Housing's Summer Session webpage for application information. Completed contracts must be submitted with full payment to Conference Housing by the application deadline.
