Building Namesake

Fred Hathaway Bixby

Fred Hathaway Bixby

Born: 1875
Deceased: 1952

Bixby Hall was built in 1960 and is named after Fred Hathaway Bixby (1875-1952). A graduate of UC Berkeley, Mr. Bixby was a rancher and livestock breeder, and established the Bixby Ranch Company in the Long Beach area in 1926. The New York Times wrote in his obituary that he was "one of the west's leading agriculturalists", serving for a time as president of the American and California Cattlemen's Association and the California State Fair. A few years before his death, Mr. Bixby endowed a program with a generous sum to make certain that agricultural graduates from the Davis campus would have an opportunity to go out into the world with practical farm skills as well as knowledge.
